Gurnard Sailing Club
Membership Policy
Gurnard Sailing Club is the Island’s premier Dinghy Club with over 1,000 members, with families particularly well represented. We are an entirely self-help club offering high quality dinghy racing. We were established in 1931 and in 1996 received £500,000 of Lottery funding to build the present clubhouse. Grants were also received to build the apron and sea defences. This funding was given in recognition of what the club can offer the community. Gurnard Sailing Club can offer:
• Competitive Dinghy racing: a full calendar of series and one-off events and regattas. Club racing is built around Sunday mornings March to December and additionally on Wednesday evenings April to September. The event of the year is Cowes Dinghy Week. This involves six days of racing held at the end of July, effectively making it a Cowes Week for dinghies.
• Dinghy parking: on club land and rented sites. Space is at a premium and is offered to those sailing regularly. Spaces cannot be allocated to boats that do not sail.
• Training & Development: We team up with professional sailing schools in Cowes to offer our beginners, young and old, training over 2 weekends in the sheltered waters of the Medina River. Training is then continued at the club through the summer, in the form of cadet training on Thursday evenings and one-off training days and practice sessions. The club owns six Pico dinghies which are available for hire by members with RYA Youth Sailing Scheme level 2 or equivalent to improve their skills, or to join in with racing at the club, before buying their own boat.
• Powerboating: the club is an RYA Training Centre. Safe sailing can only be with good safety cover. Competent rib crews are a priority at Gurnard and as a result we can offer RYA Level 1, 2 and Safety Boat courses.
• A vibrant social scene: the club is not all about sailing! We have an extensive social calendar offering regular events such as supper evenings, quiz nights, etc. Meals are produced for club race days by the members who can also serve you from our licensed bar. There is something to appeal to every taste.
The race management, safety boat crewing, preparation of meals, serving of drinks and general maintenance of the club is all carried out by members, and as a result we do expect assistance from all adult members in support of our continuing successful development.
When deciding which box to tick please rest assured you will not be expected to do any duties for the first time without the support of other members. If you are the sort of person to get stuck in, the opportunities are limitless and voluntary duties are a great way to meet people and get involved in Club life. Senior members can opt for ‘light duties’ i.e. local mailings or buying small items when out shopping, if they feel full duties would be too much.
Membership applications are approved at General Committee meetings every month (usually the third Monday). Please send your application, with fee, to the clubhouse one week before the meeting. Please make yourself known to any of the Flag Officers or General Committee members who may be in the club when you call. Welcome to the Club!
