Sailing Report 15 April 2012

The third Spring Series race took place on a near-perfect day in Gurnard Bay last Sunday, with the F4-5 northerly giving some spectacular downwind sailing for all classes.

Closest finish was in the fast group, where Steve Cole and Pete Green held it all together to win by a mere 2 seconds from Keith Hayden, with Martin Scott third.

Despite inverting in his RS400 just before the start, James Downer recovered to win the first race comfortably, followed home by Paul Bowen and birthday boy Brett Aarons. After a swim in the first race Graham Deegan made a determined start in the second, but was overtaken by Bowen and Aarons by the finish with Downer dropping out damaged.

Mark Robinson’s Contender likes it breezy and prevailed in the medium group, tailed by Gary Collett’s 470, with Mark Harrison and Phil Wright scrapping for third place.

Robin Leather dominated the cat fleet from the gun, with Paul Tanner enjoying the stiff conditions and doing his thing downwind in a cloud of spray as the best of the rest. Laurie Gustar in a new blue bone dome was third after Mike Martin faded with gear problems.

After 3 strenuous inshore rounds for the final group, Mike Peddar came through on handicap followed by Richard and Lily Ellis’ Feva and Rebecca Metcalf’s Laser 4.7 who crossed the line only a second apart.
