It is with sadness that we report the passing of Brian Cole, our ex-admiral. He was a key part of the club for many years and has had a huge input to its success .Our thoughts are with his family Jan, Steve and Tim
Joyce Martin, our current Admiral has written this tribute:
For as long as I can remember, Brian's name has been synonymous with sailing. Former Director of the National Sailing Centre; following his retirement from that role, Brian continued to promote the sport of sailing through his involvement with Gurnard SC. As Rear Commodore Sailing, for many years Brian presided over the Sailing Committee, organising sailing for the members and all that entailed. Brian took a particular interest in encouraging young sailors, including working with sponsors to facilitate their development. Most of you will remember Brian as Sunday morning race officer. Those of us who worked with Brian in the race box knew him as an engaging professional, who strove to set courses which stretched the able and encouraged those starting out.
Brian was always fun to be around, whether on the dance floor at the Annual Dinner and Dance, or organising sailing quizzes for the Sport Relief charity. Latterly, Gurnard SC was fortunate to be able to appoint Brian as our Admiral, in which role he served for four years. Brian's sons, Steve and Tim, continue Brian's great work at the Club. Our thoughts are especially with Brian's wife, Jan, at this sad time. We will miss you, Brian.
