Mike Martin Memorial Race – Sunday 31st July 2016
More than thirty boats turned out on Sunday to take part in the Mike Martin memorial race, which was sailed in sparkling sunshine.  The race took the form of an average rounds race, sailed in the bay in front of the clubhouse.  Humphrey Carter, sailing his D-One, got a great start managing five rounds of the course before the buzzer went to summon the fleet to the finishing line.  The light conditions particularly suited the Aero fleet; Brett Aarons flying around the course.  Paul Bowen and Pete Newlands competed to be first Shadow across the line.  Cadet, Thomas Leather, enjoyed his first experience trapezing in the RS500 helmed by Tim Wilkins.  Young Pico sailor, Sophie Wright, helming for the first time in a Club race, was delighted to complete a single round and receive a finish gun.  When the sums were done, it was Libby Deegan who prevailed ahead of Humphrey Carter and Brett Aarons.  The charity race raised a magnificent £237.50, which will be divided between the Hants. & IW Air Ambulance and Sustrans – a charity which was particularly close to the heart of Mike.  The family were touched by the loyalty of the  members who supported the event, either on the water or by turning up to watch and enjoy a buffet lunch, prepared by Simon Davies.  A huge thank you to everyone involved.
