Vernon Bowen
It is with great sadness that we write of the passing of Vernon Bowen on the 17th March. A long time member of Gurnard Sailing Club, spanning 60 years, Vernon helped shape the club and promote sailing at grass roots, which has benefited so many across decades. From helping to organise safety cover during over subscribed Dinghy Weeks, to towing 15 Mirror dinghies to open events in Southampton Water and back, in a day, Vernon got sailors racing and enjoying the sport. An accomplished sailor in his own right, once as tactician, scoring an impressive 6 first places in an 80 strong Sigma 33 Cowes Week fleet. The passion for the sport is best recognised by looking at how he developed the enjoyment and competitive sailing shown by Paul and Shaun. Watching Vernon watch Paul and Shaun race reminds me that you dont have to be on the water to love the sport.
Vernon will be missed by many, and he leaves an empty space and loss of knowledgeable chat on the sea wall that will never be filled. Our thoughts are with Vernons family at this most difficult time. Funeral service at IW Crematorium on 17th April at 2.15pm
