Executive and Flag Officers

Gurnard Sailing Club is owned by its members. The principal assets are held in trust by the Trustees. The club operates within a set of rules, bye-laws and policies which are consistent with model rules proposed by our regulatory body, the RYA. Like any other club, it is organised with committees, chairmen etc. Due to its connection with the sea and hence the navy, the various posts use naval terminology, each of which has specific responsibilities to ensure the smooth running of the club.

The Admiral, who is the nominal head of the club, is appointed at the annual general meeting on the recommendation of the General Committee. The Admiral does not have a specific role but will usually be a former officer of the club and will offer guidance and assistance to the Commodore

The Commodore is the principal "flag" officer, sets a direction for the club and is responsible for chairing meetings of the General Committee

The Vice Commodore is deputy chairman of the General Committee, is generally the commodore-in-waiting and is responsible for the organisation of the club's annual sailing regatta

The Rear Commodore Sailing is responsible for all water-based activities and will chair meetings of the sailing committee

The Rear Commodore House is responsible for all land-based activities, including overseeing the maintenance of the building, running of the kitchen and implementation of a social programme

The Hon. Secretary is an officer whose main duties include keeping full minutes of all meetings, conducting the correspondence of the club and maintaining all club legal documentation

The Hon. Membership Secretary is an officer responsible for dealing with membership renewals and enquiries, and for keeping a register of all club members' names and addresses

The Hon. Treasurer is an officer responsible for managing the club's accounts, providing cash flow reports to the general committee and preparation of an annual balance sheet

The General Committee members act as representatives of the membership at large and, with the executive officers, are responsible for the management of the affairs of the club

The Training Principal, who is responsible for all aspects of the club's sail and power boat training within the RYA's standards

The Hon. Independent Examiner, who is responsible, as an independent person, for ensuring that the club's financial records fairly represent the accounts as and when presented to the membership and to raise any concerns regarding the club's financial position should such concerns arise

The Sailing Committee, which is responsible for recommending the sailing programme, ensuring that race box/rescue boat duty is organised to effect the programme and maintaining race result records
