Training for 2020

Published 08:59 on 24 Dec 2019

Selection Guidance for Gurnard Sailing Club Training

Gurnard Sailing Club are committed to providing training for our cadets. The aim of the training is to develop the pathway for our junior sailors from Sharks and Dolphins into cadets Years 4 to Year 11 and to assess provision for adults who are new to sailing.

Applications for the 2020 Cadet training season are changing to try and avoid the rather chaotic scramble for places we had last year and to ensure we can maintain the learning pathway through the years. It will open in early January 2020 and you are able to make an application via the Gurnard Sailing Club website until 1st February 2020. During the application process you will be asked to confirm current level of sailing, aims and goals for the coming season and current racing level (if applicable). Please remember that the cadet training is to promote sailors growth on the pathway and priority will be given to those currently on the pathway along with consideration of previous attendance and instructor feedback.

Beginners need to be at least RYA Level 1 and there are plans to run a course at UKSA in the Easter holidays before cadets starts.

Places offered to sailors not currently on the pathway will be determined based on sailor information provided at the time of application and group availability over different levels in the cadet programme.

As a club purely run by volunteers, parental contribution is expected from all sailor parents who are accepted on the cadet training course. Parental help required on Thursday and Friday evenings is as follows:

Beach duties (launching and recovery in the water on Thursdays for the younger less experienced cadets, as always helpful to get their rudders down for them.)

Rib launch and recovery duties (enables instructors to focus on delivering the session, not launching boats).

Two volunteers to be the season coordinators (one on the beach for launch and recovery of dinghies and trolley organisation and one for rib launch/recovery). Please indicate on your application form if you are able to help in these areas.

Of course, there will be the usual club duties in the kitchen for Thursday and Friday nights.

Sharks & Dolphins applications will be out sometime in February.

We will email once the application form for training is available on the website.

It just remains for us to wish you all a very happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year.
