Training Information

Published 11:44 on 14 Jan 2021

Dear Members

As we go into another year of some uncertainty, it makes it hard to predict what will happen with regards to the sailing opportunities we can offer. We have however taken the decision to plan for a full year of training, so we are prepared and ready to deliver if we are permitted to do so.

We potentially have a larger number than normal of cadets wishing to enrol for this year. This is partly due to the inability to run training last year, coupled with a large influx from the Sharks and Dolphins programme.

With this in mind, we have gained the support of UKSA who this year will run cadet training for some beginners at their site on Thursday nights. This will provide an excellent learning environment for beginners, providing the equipment and safe sailing area. It is important, and our aim remains, that all cadets participating at UKSA are still made to feel part of GSC. Therefore, initial cadet briefing, prize giving and maybe some theory sessions will held be at GSC.

This season cadet applications are open for:

  • Complete Beginners up to RYA Start Racing Level.
  • Children should be in school year 4 upwards.

We are all looking forward to seeing cadets back on the water and are hoping that we can get a full year in, but we still need to be following any government or RYA advice that might be in place at the time. So, we may need to alter dates and the program. Please bear with us on this.

The price for all cadets is £60 per child. For those at UKSA, this includes boat hire and any other equipment needed as well.

We are of course hoping to run this again this year and we have an excellent team in place to deliver the sessions. A separate email will be coming out in the near future with more details and the dates of when the system will go live for applications.

Price for Sharks & Dolphins is £60 per family.

For those more experienced past cadets and adults that would like training / coaching, we are also looking at various programmes to put in place this season. We will keep you posted.

The training team have provisionally put aside some dates for these to take place. These are subsidised for GSC members and are a great way to stay actively involved with the club.

DI Courses are £165 & AI Courses are £25

Provisional dates as follows:

DI - 6 9th April

AI 24-25th April

We have dates in the calendar to run these courses. The safety boat course is really important and incredibly useful for those who have the PB2 qualification but are helming the safety boats during events. This course will help you to develop the skills to be able to help recover dinghies and sailors in all sorts of scenarios. These courses are subsidised for GSC members.

PB2 Course is £225 and the SB Course is £35

Provisional dates are:

PB2 16th, 17th and 24th April

SB 1st and 2nd May

Applications for training will go live on the website on 1st February. This will stay live for 2 weeks. We will then address what level of interest we have, allocate places and formalise groups and nights. Please note that an application does not mean an automatic place and the timing of your application within those two weeks isn't relevant to being offered a place. The training team will then consider all applications and determine the allocation of places. Please rest assured we will do everything we can to accommodate as many people as possible within the constraints of the number of our volunteer instructors.

Any courses that are unable to proceed will of course be refunded. However, payment will not be taken at the time of your application. Invoices will be issued in due course following confirmation of a place.

If anybody has any questions about any of the above, please feel free to email the following depending on your enquiry:

Can we also ask that any outstanding membership invoices or winter boat site invoices are settled before applying for training. It is also the last day for boat site applications tomorrow. Of course, late applications will be considered but spaces are tight and therefore can't be guaranteed.
