RS Games 2022

Published 09:07 on 10 Aug 2022

The last 2 weeks has seen 30 sailors from Gurnard Sailing Club competing at the RS Games 2022 in Weymouth. This event takes place every 4 years and comprising lots of World, European and National championships.

The first week saw GSC sailors in the RS Fevas and RS100 classes. Samuel and Thomas took on 184 other Fevas in the world championships and finished a highly credible mid fleet. Mark Harrison finished an excellent 7th in the RS100 Nationals. Very impressive considering he missed a full day of sailing due to illness. The second week saw the RS500, Aeros and Tera sailors descend upon the WPNSA and the biggest contingent from GSC.4 out of the 34, RS500s were from GSC. Thomas and Maeve were the lightest combined crew and possibly youngest at the event and had some amazing results considering the very strong winds. They saved the best to last with an excellent 8th in the final race.

Ben was sailing with son Taylor and unfortunately lost a day due to broken equipment. However, they came back fighting and put in some incredible results as the regatta went on with four top 10 finishes with a 4th in the final race.

Robin and Sophie unfortunately had a mixed regatta due to injury but I am sure they will be back on the circuit again.

It was Tim and Heather who stole the show in the RS500s. They started well and just got better and better. They posted 7 1st place results and comfortably became RS500 World and National Champions again. Phenomenal result from these two and they were amazing ambassadors for GSC during the week. Huge congratulations.

In the Aero European Championships, Chris Hobday and Kingsley Brown had a great battle in the Aero 7 fleet with Chris narrowly beating his club mate. It was a very competitive fleet of 51 boats.

The biggest club presence was in the RS Tera World Championships. One day was lost due to wind and visibility but the race officers did a very good job in trying to complete as many races as possible as the week went on.

In the Tera Regatta fleet, Luc and Barnaby had a very full-on week and sailed every day with 14 races taking place in total. Luc finished the regatta in an incredible 3rd place. In the Sport fleet we had Jasper, Fallon, Ran, Rupert and Elsie who all showed some great resilience during some really windy days. Further up the fleet we had Cassius and Samuel battling to get on the podium. Both posted some incredible results in this fleet of 64 boats with a 1st place race for Samuel and a 2nd place final race for Cass. Overall, Cass finished 7th and Samuel 8th. Amazing regatta for these two sailors. In the Tera Pro fleet there were five GSC members pushing hard with places changing regularly. Ben just missed out on a podium in 4th and Will finished 6th. Ruby was awarded a prize for being 2nd girl (10th overall). Alice got a great 4th place in one of the races on the last day, always nice to end on a high and ended up finishing in the top third. Olly (GSCs newest member) had a consistent regatta and finished mid fleet. What a fabulous time had by all, both on and off the water, at the #RSGames+4656
